I also had this problem. Fortunately the regedit fix works. However, it was trying to use Itunes to burn CDs that caused the problem. So does anyone have advice on how to put my Itunes playlist on a CD? I can't seem to make Itunes & Windows Media Player communicate.
Thanks! |

Both of my CD/ROM's disappeared.
I had to end up doing the following:
Regedit
1. Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key (Windows 2k/XP):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
2. Restart your computer.
This worked for me and my disappearing CD/ROM problem.
Windows 98 located at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318} |

This registry fixed worked perfectly. Thank you SO much for this information.
Windows XP repair setup didn't fix it, Norton Utilities didn't fix it but this one little registry change made everything work.
Thanks again |

I had this same problem when Adaptec's Direct CD got corrupted upon 2nd reboot. Both of my CD/ROM's disappeared.
I had to end up doing the following:
Regedit
1. Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
2. Restart your computer.
This worked for me and my disappearing CD/ROM problem. I don't know if it will work for your instance but if you are comfortable with editing the registry then it would be worth a shot. If you aren't comfortable then make a backup of your registry before you start and you can import it back in returning everything to where it was. Good luck and I hope it helps. If not, and you didn't install or uninstall anything prior to this happening then most likely your only solution is to partition and reinstall the operating system. |

I recently was messin around with a new reg cleaner program and my cd-rom dissapeared.
I deleted the reg entry exactly as you described, rebooted and and it came up like it was never gone.
Thx a lot for posting your solution.

| You could try running Norton Utilities to find and fix your registry problem. You might still need to re-install your CD-ROM again though. |
